The local group finals of the Rotary Young Chef Competition were held at The School of Hospitality and Food, Bournemouth and Poole College, on Friday 8th January. Talbot Heath's Hannah Glatter (Upper 4) and Francesca Rowley (Lower 4) were two of fifteen students selected to participate from ten local schools.
The finalists each cooked and presented a two course meal for two people, costing no more than £8 per head, within a 90 minute time limit. The dishes were judged by a panel including Dave Boland, senior lecturer for the Academy of Culinary Arts Specialised Chefs Course, Chef Tutor Gary Kilminster from the College, and President Mike Dwyer from the Rotary Club of Bournemouth.
Over a hundred people attended the competition in support of the schools this year, and the judges commented that there were no losers due to the phenomenally high standard. Congratulations go to both Hannah and Fran, who remained calm and organised under intense pressure, to produce an outstanding array of high quality dishes. Hannah’s menu was steak served with sage mash, stir fry winter vegetables and a red wine jus, followed by apple crumble pie and Crème Anglais.
Francesca’s menu was honey roasted pork fillet with roasted vegetables, steamed asparagus and a cream apple sauce, followed by saucy brownie pudding with mascarpone cream and raspberries.
