Sixth Form

The Sixth Form at Talbot Heath School has been established for over 120 years. We have a long tradition of academic excellence and our students achieve some of the best A Level results in Dorset. However, Sixth Form life at Talbot Heath School offers more than impressive academic success. Students enjoy being educated in a warm and caring environment where individuals are supported and advised by subject staff and tutors. Talbot Heath’s Sixth Form welcomes all girls with a sound basis of subjects at GCSE who wish to pursue more advanced studies.

We offer a wide range of Advanced level courses from which students usually select four to study at AS level in the Lower Sixth. In the Upper Sixth we would expect students to study three or four subjects mostly at A2 with, perhaps, a new subject at AS.

The Sixth Form offers existing Talbot heath pupils the benefit of continuing their education in a familiar, friendly atmosphere, thus facilitating the progress from GCSE to A level. Every year we also welcome a number of girls from other schools who quickly make new friends and settle into Sixth Form life. Relationships between students and staff are less formal; teaching and tutorial groups are smaller and there are opportunities to explore new ideas in a relaxed, yet purposeful atmosphere

As you would expect, life in the Sixth Form is very different from the school’s lower years. There is more freedom - students may wear their own clothes (within reason!) and can organise their own time. With freedom comes responsibility: Sixth Formers take an active role and keen interest in the wider life of the school. The head girls, deputies and prefect team assist in day-to-day duties, acting as mentors and role models to younger pupils. Sixth Formers also run charity events and are key figures in school societies and sports teams.

The newly refurbished Sixth Form Centre offers several quiet study areas in addition to the library and computer suites as well as a large, well-equipped work room. The common rooms are bright and comfortable and include kitchens and locker areas.

Sixth Form tutors, together with the careers adviser and speakers from Southampton University, give individual guidance in future study, training and careers. They help students fill in UCAS forms and offer advice on the content of personal statements and CVs. We arrange mock interviews and work experience in this country and abroad, and help in the planning of a ‘gap’ year between school and higher education.

We are proud of our Sixth Form students: they are bright, resourceful and ambitious young women who leave Talbot Heath well equipped to take their place in society as responsible, caring, self-confident and happy individuals.
