A small group of Talbot Heath School Swimming Academy pupils kicked off their half term with a trip to Millfield School for the Chelsea & Westminster Level 2 Open Meet, and they certainly made their presence felt. Sharing the pool with some of the country’s top swimmers, the team also witnessed an impressive British Junior Record set by Charlie P in the 200m Freestyle.
Across 26 swims, the team produced an impressive 22 personal best times, demonstrating how growing confidence in racing, combined with the progress and effort being put into training, certainly pays off.
Lily K continued her excellent run of form, lowering her times and reaching the podium on two occasions in the 400m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke. Competing at the younger end of a double-age-group category makes her performances all the more impressive. However, it was Lily’s ability to reset, refocus and deliver consistently across the weekend that really stood out. With eight race appearances, Lily demonstrated an important skill in competitive swimming: the ability to recover and refuel between races, take the lessons from each performance and come back ready to perform again. Developing the aerobic capacity to recover between demanding races is an important part of our young athletes’ training programme. Equally, learning how to improve on a heat performance when returning for a final is a valuable performance skill that takes time, patience and confidence to develop.
Caidee also enjoyed a strong weekend, recording personal bests in the 400m Individual Medley, 100m and 200m Breaststroke, 200m Individual Medley and 50m Freestyle. Her performances were rewarded with sixth place in the 200m Breaststroke final. Caidee’s racing continues to gather momentum, with growing confidence, positive preparation and a willingness to step outside her comfort zone helping her find that extra gear when it matters.
Romilly H made her mark, producing personal best performances across the 50m and 100m Backstroke and 50m and 100m Freestyle. Romilly broke through the 30-second barrier in the 50m Freestyle for the first time and took an impressive three seconds off her personal best in the 100m event.
Florence C continued her progression, lowering her 50m Backstroke time by more than two seconds across the last two meets, while also taking a second off both the 100m free and 100m back events. A reward for an improved effort in the quality training sets.
Vic H also made progress in the 100m Breaststroke, taking a full second off her previous best. By controlling the opening 25m, Vic was able to finish strongly in the second half of the race, demonstrating the importance of effective race management.
Beyond the times and results, perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the weekend was seeing the swimmers begin to translate their daily training into more intelligent, controlled and confident racing. There was clear progress in how they approached the opening stages of their events, managing their pace and building towards stronger finishes, all while maintaining the technical skills that are continually reinforced in training.
These are the foundations of becoming more complete and adaptable competitive athletes. Racing well is about far more than swimming fast; it is about understanding how to channel adrenaline, make decisions under pressure, adapt between events and execute skills when fatigue begins to take hold. The ability to learn from each performance, reset mentally and return ready to improve is what separates simply competing from truly developing as a racer.
Ultimately, we want our swimmers to become athletes who understand their own performances, trust their preparation and have the confidence to take responsibility for their racing. These are the qualities that create lasting progression, both in and out of the pool.

A fantastic start to half term and another positive step forward for the Talbot Heath Swimming Academy team.
A special thank you goes to Sam and Maxine, who donned their whites and gave up their time to officiate throughout the weekend.
We would also like to extend our thanks to the entire team, volunteers at Chelsea & Westminster Swimming Club and to all the officials for once again delivering a brilliantly organised, high-energy and motivating competition environment. Meets like these provide young swimmers with the opportunity to challenge themselves, learn from others and experience the very best of competitive swimming.
