It was fantastic to see so many of our alumnae back in school on Friday 1st May to help us celebrate Talbot Heath’s 140th Birthday. They had travelled from far and wide to participate in this annual celebration of the school’s unique heritage, enjoying tours of the school with current pupils, and a parallel service observing the rich traditions that have characterised this celebration since the school moved to its current site in 1935.
It was a wonderful day of tradition, warmth and gleeful memories of school days past, coupled with the chance to reflect on change and continuity in all its richness as guests stood in the enclosed outdoor quad, unchanged since the building of the school, and enjoyed tea and birthday cake in the very modern Hub building.
The school was founded forty-nine years into the reign of Queen Victoria, by Mary Broad, who was renowned for doing what she thought was right, ignoring equally criticism and tradition. Her founding vision was driven by a fiercely independent and pioneering energy, intent on improving society and remedying inequality. The founding motto, Honour before Honours, still sits proudly above the front doors of the main school building, running like a golden thread across the generations and finding expression and amplification in our current values: Curious Minds, Generous Hearts, and Adventurous Spirits.
With so many alumnae present to celebrate the 140th Birthday, it seems fitting to reflect on the generations of governors, staff and pupils who have helped to shape this legacy, and the previous Heads of Talbot Heath, stretching back to Miss Broad, who have stewarded the school and nurtured the flame of education that has given opportunity to so many girls over the years.
The spirit of this rich history lives on in the school today, which abounds with strength, vibrancy, and character. According to the school archives, pupils helped to build the school:
“Everyone who raised 10s or over was entitled to buy a brick… This was great fun as we had to ascend ladders and walk along parapets to help build the wall.”

To continue the building metaphor, by recognising the school’s rich history, identity, and strengths, we are also affirming the present and laying the foundations for an equally successful future. Current pupils had a full school birthday experience and no doubt enjoyed the unique traditions of the event, which include cutting a school birthday cake in assembly, particular hymns and processionals, and the traditional half-day close. We then said a goodbye to the current Upper 6 pupils over lunch, wishing them the very best of luck in their forthcoming examinations, as the latest wave of pupils to leave Talbot Heath and take on the world.
Overall, a fantastic day of celebration and looking confidently towards the future from the security of existing strengths and traditions!
With best wishes,
Ross Cameron, Talbot Heath Head
