Celebrating Achievement, Character and the Next Chapter

Talbot Heath was delighted to welcome back our U5 and U6 students on Wednesday 24 June for a memorable Senior Awards Celebration, marking the end of an important chapter in their school journey.

The afternoon was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate not only the successful completion of GCSE and A Level studies, but also the many achievements, contributions and personal qualities that make our students so special.

Alongside academic success, awards recognised excellence, outstanding progress and perseverance, as well as exceptional contributions to student leadership, innovation, service to the school, music, English and drama. This year also saw the introduction of the Talbot Heath Key Stage Awards, honouring students who have truly embodied our school values through both their academic approach and their commitment to the wider school community.

Adding to the celebrations, Upper Sixth student Maya Patel captivated the audience with a stunning performance of I Miss the Mountains from the musical Next to Normal, providing a memorable musical highlight to the afternoon.

We were especially pleased to welcome back Talbot Heath alumna Chantel Care as our guest speaker. Having attended the school between 1987 and 1994, Chantel went on to study Geography at Cambridge before building an extraordinary career spanning international education, elite sport, diplomacy, public service and the charitable sector. Her work has taken her across Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, where she has worked in French, Arabic and Serbian. A former international sportswoman, she is now also a coach and proud parent of two daughters currently at Talbot Heath.

Chantel’s honest and inspiring address resonated deeply with students, offering reassurance that uncertainty, setbacks and self-doubt are not obstacles to success but often the very experiences that help shape it.

She encouraged students to embrace the unknown, reminding them that life rarely follows a perfectly mapped-out plan. Confidence, she explained, is rarely something we possess before taking the first step—it grows through experience. Some of life’s greatest opportunities emerge when carefully laid plans change direction.

Reflecting on her own journey, Chantel shared how choosing a challenging and uncertain career with the Foreign Office over a more secure sporting path ultimately transformed her life. She urged students to choose the opportunities they would regret not taking, even if they seem daunting at first.

She also spoke candidly about the unseen realities behind success, reminding students that every achievement is built upon persistence, resilience and lessons learned from failure. Whether mastering a new language or navigating demanding international roles, progress is often gradual before breakthrough moments arrive.

Echoing Talbot Heath’s motto, Honour Before Honours, Chantel emphasised that character ultimately matters more than accolades. Throughout her career, qualities such as integrity, kindness, reliability and courage proved far more valuable than any title or award.

Her closing message left a lasting impression on everyone in the room:

“Be ambitious and make plans—but don’t be surprised when life disrupts them.”

She encouraged students to face uncertainty with curiosity and courage, leaving them with one final piece of advice:

“Be brave enough to take the next step—not because you’re ready or certain, but because you’re curious enough to find out what happens next.”

As our students prepare to embark on exciting new adventures, the Senior Awards Celebration was a fitting reminder that success is measured not only by results, but by resilience, character and the willingness to embrace whatever comes next. Congratulations to every award recipient and to all of our U5 and U6 students—we wish you every success for the future.
