Green Planet Week – Sustainability in our Local Community

On Tuesday 20th May, both Upper 3 and Lower 6 year groups were each treated to an enlightening session with Lois Betts, the Sustainability Manager at our local Bournemouth University. Lois spoke passionately about the environmental journey at BU and how they have transformed many areas of their university life into a sustainable community. They have worked tirelessly to achieve the EcoCampus platinum award and various ISO certifications; BU is now ranked 8th in the world for sustainability!  Students learnt about initiatives with their transport network, renewable energy solutions as well as a brilliant initiative with coffee cup recycling.

Lois highlighted the importance of embedding climate consciousness into all fields of work from engineering and urban planning, to finance and fashion. It was fascinating to hear about sustainable options that our students could make in their everyday lives, from buying the latest fashions to choosing their bank account. Sustainability will become a career imperative for our students and our session with Lois gave great insight to the career pathways and projects that could really make a difference in their future world or work. She encouraged all students to ask pertinent questions about sustainable options and to challenge their employers in the future.

We enjoyed a fantastic Q&A session at the end of each talk;  Lois was impressed with the maturity and depth of questions from even our youngest senior school students. We are grateful to Lois for her time and energy in delivering a thought provoking and enjoyable Upper 3 Careers session and Lower 6 Enrichment session.

Thanks go to Debs Barham for organising this event.
