Our A Level Psychology students recently enjoyed an enriching and memorable trip to Vienna, Austria, bringing many aspects of their studies to life through a fascinating programme of educational visits and cultural experiences.
One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the Narrenturm (Fool’s Tower) Anatomical Museum, housed within what was originally Europe’s oldest purpose-built institution for psychiatric patients. Students explored a range of real anatomical specimens and medical conditions, making valuable connections to their Biopsychology studies and deepening their understanding of the relationship between the brain, behaviour and physical health.
The group also visited the Mauthausen Memorial concentration camp, an experience that provided a powerful opportunity for reflection. Students considered the psychological and historical factors that contributed to the Holocaust, linking their observations to topics including social influence, destructive obedience and Adorno’s Authoritarian Personality Theory.
Another key visit took students to the former home and practice of Sigmund Freud, where they explored the origins of psychoanalysis and gained a deeper appreciation of Freud’s influence on the development of the psychodynamic approach to understanding human behaviour.
Alongside the academic programme, students immersed themselves in Vienna’s rich culture and history. They explored many of the city’s famous landmarks, enjoyed thrilling rides at the iconic Prater amusement park and sampled traditional Viennese cuisine. They also became remarkably adept at navigating Vienna’s excellent transport system, confidently travelling across the city by tram, underground, train and even Uber.
The trip provided an outstanding combination of psychology, history and cultural exploration, enabling students to see classroom concepts in a real-world context while creating unforgettable memories. Throughout the visit, our students represented the school exceptionally well, demonstrating curiosity, maturity and enthusiasm at every stage of the journey.
