A level Music trip to London
On Saturday 23rd April - Shakespeare's birthday and the day of his death - two of Talbot Heath's sixth form musicians, Iolla and Alice, travelled by train to London with Miss Williams and Mrs Atkinson to hear former Talbot Heath pupil Kate Royal sing at the Royal Festival Hall.
Kate was a pupil at Talbot Heath in the 1990's and then went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has become one of Britain's best loved Sopranos and star of London's Royal Opera House, Glyndbourne Opera and New York’s Carnegie Hall and has recorded three solo discs for EMI Classics.
The concert was a special celebration of Shakespeare on the 400th Anniversary since his death. Operatic excerpts included the operas ‘Othello’ and ‘Hamlet’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Orchestral music included Prokofiev’s ‘Romeo and Juliette’, Vaughan Williams ‘Serenade to Music’ and Walton’s ‘Henry V’.
Of course, there was the inevitable shopping in the morning with visits to Fortnum and Masons and Oxford Street - with refreshment stops at Costa and Wagamamas.
This was a particularly exciting day for Iolla who dreams of following in Kate's footsteps and hopes to gain a place as a singer at one of the London Conservatoires next year.
