Food Preparation and Nutrition

Food is a vital part of our daily lives, essential for life. Food Preparation and Nutrition equips learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to prepare different foods and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating to practical activities. It encourages learners to cook, enables them to make informed decisions about food and develops the skills they require to feed themselves and others, affordably and well, now and in the future.

The Food Department is a vibrant and inspiring place to learn, with an atmosphere of busy and purposeful activity. The subject is taught to all students in KS3, with the aim of instilling a love of cooking that will open the door to one of the greatest expressions of human creativity. Lessons take place in our bright, well-equipped Food Room, giving students the opportunity to develop their independence, time management and organisational skills, and work safely and creatively with others.

Students in KS4 may choose to study GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition, an exciting and creative course, which builds on the practical and theoretical skills acquired at KS3, allowing them to develop a thorough understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of food materials. They will have the opportunity to enter national competitions including the ICG Award, as well as take part in our own annual Bake Off and Master Chef events.
